So I’ve been doing a few things recently. I made a couple of new videos on YouTube (YouTube Here) and I have a couple more already scripted that I hope to release in the next few weeks, so subscribe if you haven’t yet! (Or don’t, you don’t have to…). I am going to make a few videos about movies and continue my Mutant Memories videos next.
I tried to remix a song, which I’ve never done before. I have made many covers but never a remix. In case you don’t know my band, Frost Flowers sort of is ambient sometimes abstract music. I feel like my music is closest to a soundtrack or a film score. But in my new album, I am trying to go a lot more melodically and outside my comfort zone. So this remix was just a fun project to learn more about my DAWs. I remixed Nine Inch Nails, The Day the Whole World Went Away. I think it turned out pretty well. I’m proud of the last two minutes of the song. Overall, it was just a fun project, and I learned a lot and that is what matters. You can listen to it HERE.Â
I’ve just started the draft I planned to write starting this month, but I haven’t written as much as I would have liked. But I guess 2000 words in two days of a more polished draft is not too shabby. But my goal is to finish it by the end of the year also, so there is plenty of time! It’s a difficult write, probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever written. The weirdest part is it doesn’t seem like it should be so hard, but also this story is very important to me so it’s putting extra pressure on me
In a few days, I will release chapter one of my Substack exclusive novel, Innocence and Fear. This is a story I started writing when I was 16-17 years old, but I have completely re-written it and edited it since then. Well, most of it anyway, the big re-write is a little more than half done, but I still need to edit the existing chapters again and write the final chapters. I've decided to release it now for free on Substack for two specific reasons. The first reason is that I hope having eyes on the story will help me feel motivated to finish it. The second is, I don’t plan on publishing this for-profit anywhere soon, or maybe even ever. The main reason for this is when I originally wrote this story, it was a kind of fanfiction of a fanfiction.Â
I rewrote a fanfiction I liked first adding in extra scenes. Then the next draft I wrote at 18. In that draft, I scrubbed the fandom part of the story and wrote my draft with original characters. Then I wrote another draft which was about 90% original. I wrote these by hand, so all I had were two deteriorating notebooks of a mostly original story. But I used some scenes from the Fanfiction as inspiration, so they are not completely original in this 2nd draft. Luckily, I remembered what was mine, and what belonged to the author of the Fanfiction. I decided it would be fun to re-write this story from scratch for NaNoWriMo in 2021. So this is the third version of this story I have written. I followed the old plot, but completely re-wrote the characters and almost everything else from the ground up.
So the reason I am not naming the Fanfiction or author of Fanfiction is…I don’t know what it is or who they are, unfortunately. I know it seems odd, but I honestly have no idea. I have searched in every way I can think of to find the author or a copy of this story. I don’t even remember what the title sounded like or was about. I am still actively looking for this story. All I know is it came out a long time even before I found it and it’s a story about the Hellions and the New Mutants. If or when I find this story, I will definitely tell you all what it is! But so far I’ve had no luck. I’m sure I had it saved on an external hard drive, but the said drive died. So there are a few borrowed plot points, but again 90-95% of this is an original story. What I’m releasing here on Substack is not that derivative of the fanfic anymore in its current form.
I just wanted to be transparent about where this story came from, and also why I do not want to sell it. Making money off of something that is so influenced by another work doesn’t seem right to me. But I think it has been a fun exercise. My intention is to keep the original fanfic alive through my reimagining and retelling of it
. I am doing it as an act of love and to preserve something I wrote so young. So this is just for fun, I guess kind of a homage, and I hope you all enjoy it too. The first chapter will come out next Monday, and every month there will be a new chapter.Â
I've been reading a lot and have a Goodreads account. You can find the link to it, along with my other social media accounts, on my main webpage (HERE). Something I’ve been doing in the last week is practicing and learning French. The French is going very well so far. I am not very far along, but this is the easiest French has ever been for me. I hope you are all having a great summer.
